Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate. Apex acute to acuminate or obtuse. Base cuneate to truncate or cordate. Blades fleshy. Margins entire. Petiolate to subsessile. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers in axillary spikes or racemes. Flowers small, bisexual (perfect) or unisexual, each subtended by 2 pairs of decussate bracts. Perianth in 1 series lobed nearly to base. Stamens 5, opposite the petals; filaments reflexed in bud, adnate to base of petals; anthers dithecal. Ovary superior, 1-celled, 3-carpellate; ovule 1, basal.

Fruit: Utricle; globose; enclosed by the corolla [van Steenis; 1957]. Seeds globose; true endosperm absent.
